Ryan was in the kitchen making himself a sandwich. I’d just got in, it was nearly eleven oh four pm, I was supposed to be back at six...seven the latest but I could not pull myself away.
For the past few months now I would give him the same bull-shit story, 'I’ve got to meet a deadline’ or ’Boss wants me to stay for overtime again.’ I knew he saw right though me even when he nodded, kissed my cheek and told me that this too shall pass.
But I couldn’t help but worry. Not for me but for Ryan. This wasn’t fair.
I hungered, starved for affection...the kind Ryan and I used to have.
‘You know they had a kilo of potatoes for sale today, marked down half price,’ he set his sandwich on a plate the set the knife in the sink. I could see that there were a half-dozen more knives there along with some coffee-stained spoons.
With a nod I sat down heavily in one of the chairs and rested my elbows on the table. Outside a flash of lightning sliced the dark, dark sky.
‘I bought two kilos.’
Ryan turned and gestured to five large bowls filled to the brim with peeled potatoes, it must have taken him hours!
‘Why did you buy so many, Ryan?’
‘I had to do something to keep myself from killing him...’ then he stepped out of the kitchen, plate in hand, ‘and you,’ and switched off the light leaving me to dwell in the sin I let take over our lives.
